Buttercream and piping bags

Do yousuffer from piping envy? I do. I’m a self-taught piping bag user and I’m not always in control of the end product! I find the cake decorating videos you find on Instagram mesmerizing as they make it seem so easy to do. I rarely make buttercream, I tend to sneak pre-made frosting into my shopping trolley or make a cream cheese frosting, but every now and then I will make buttercream. I’m always slightly horrified by how much butter I need to make butter cream, yes I know, get a grip but it is off putting!

Anyway, I wanted to try out our new smaller bake in the box mounds and thought I would make some smaller cakes to take around to my Mother-in-law for afternoon tea. These turned out just the right size for 4 adults to polish off in setting, and the buttercream I used on a chocolate pound cake was a mocha flavor. My piping wasn’t great but it does finish the cake more nicely than the pallet knife approach! Anyway, I will keep trying and keep improving . I do like those disposable piping bags though, cleaning up is the simple act of throwing them away. I made the mistake early on buying a re-usable one and the misery of trying to clean buttery oily muck out of them was awful. Then I made the mistake of make mini meringues and thought I would paint red lines inside the bag to get a candy stripe look - the meringues looked great but those stripes are still on the bag!
